TaiTalk — Privacy
Last updated: 18 September 2026.
TaiTalk translates spoken conversation between two people in real time, face to face and over calls. It handles the most sensitive thing an app can handle: what you say. This page states plainly what happens to it, and what is kept.
The short version
- Your speech is translated by a cloud speech service run by Google, as it is spoken. It has to be: the translation does not happen on the phone.
- We never receive, store or listen to your audio, and we keep no recordings anywhere.
- Written transcripts are saved on your phone only, and only while "Save conversations" is switched on. You can turn it off and you can delete them.
- Calls go between the two phones. We do not receive, relay in readable form, or store what is said on a call.
- There is no phone number, no contact-list access and no analytics. People reach you by a TaiTalk code your phone generates; only someone you have accepted can ring you.
- Signing in with Google is optional. It only lets your minutes follow you to a new phone.
What is processed, and by whom
| Data | Where it goes | Kept |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone audio while translating | Google's speech service, for translation | Not stored by us. Google's terms apply, below |
| The translated speech and its text | Back to your phone | In memory while the conversation runs |
| Conversation transcript (text only) | Your phone's private storage | Until you delete it, or not at all if "Save conversations" is off |
| Call audio | Between the two phones, encrypted | Not stored anywhere, not sent to us |
| Your TaiTalk profile: a code, the name you typed, your language, a notification token | Our servers | Until you uninstall, or ask for deletion |
| Your contact list: codes you added or accepted | Our servers | Until you remove the contact or uninstall |
| Recent calls: who, when, how long | Your phone only | Until you clear the list |
| Your minutes: a balance and when sessions started and ended, never what was said | Our servers | Until you ask for deletion |
| Google sign-in (optional): a one-way fingerprint of your Google account, not the email itself | Our servers | Until you sign out everywhere and ask for deletion |
| Rewarded videos (optional): your advertising ID | Google AdMob, under Google's terms | Governed by Google; the ID can be reset in Android settings |
| Promo codes you enter | Our servers, with the account and device that used them | Until you ask for deletion |
| Settings, and the diagnostics file you can export | Your phone only | Until you clear the app's data |
Translation is performed by Google's cloud speech service. Your audio is transmitted to Google and processed under Google's terms and privacy policy, not ours:
Google's terms for the service may allow submitted content to be used to improve their products. If that matters for a particular conversation, do not have it through TaiTalk. This is the single most important thing on this page and it is not something the app can change.
Us
Our servers never see your audio or your transcripts. They hold the small records in the table above: your code and contacts so people can ring you, and your minutes so the app knows how many you have. Requests from the app are authenticated, and the addresses they come from are logged for a short time so abuse can be spotted. Notifications that ring your phone travel through Google's notification service and carry the caller's code, name and language, nothing spoken.
Permissions, and why each one exists
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
| Microphone | To hear the conversation. This is the app. |
| Internet | To reach the translation service. |
| Notifications | To show the ongoing "translating" notice and to ring for calls. |
| Foreground service | So a conversation or a call is not killed when the screen turns off. |
| Bluetooth connect, modify audio settings | To send sound to your earbuds or the earpiece, and to tell you where it actually went. |
| Full-screen notifications, vibrate | To ring on the lock screen. |
TaiTalk asks for no location, no contacts, no storage, no camera and no phone-state access. Scanning a friend's QR code uses Google's own scanner screen; the app never opens the camera itself.
While the microphone is live, you can see it
Whenever a conversation is running there is a permanent TaiTalk notification with a Stop button. An app that can listen must never be able to listen quietly.
Your control
- Save conversations (Settings): off means nothing is written when a conversation ends.
- Delete: any single conversation or all of them; the recent-calls list from the Calls tab.
- Remove a contact: removing someone also blocks them.
- Sign out: from the You tab, on any phone.
- Delete everything: uninstalling TaiTalk, or clearing its data in Android settings, removes every transcript, setting and log on the phone. To have your server records (code, contacts, minutes, sign-in) deleted as well, write to us.
Children
TaiTalk is not designed for or directed at children.
